NYTSL

New York Technical Services Librarians, est. 1923

About

The New York Technical Services Librarians (NYTSL), established in 1923, is one of the oldest regional groups associated with ALA/ALCTS. Our organization brings together librarians and information professionals with similar interests, who discuss ideas and practices, and contribute their energy and knowledge toward mutually beneficial activities.

Two speaker programs take place each year (Fall and Spring). These meetings assist in the professional development of our members and feature a speaker addressing current issues of interest to librarians in technical services and systems. NYTSL programs are supported by event fees and generous corporate memberships. This support by corporations enables NYTSL to invite several library school students to attend these meetings as our guests.

NYTSL’s annual spring reception, co-sponsored with other professional groups in the region, is an opportunity for new professionals and library school students to meet active librarians involved in a variety of library and information careers.

NYTSL Archives

Columbia University holds NYTSL’s print archives consisting of 6 linear feet of material from 1923-1993. Correspondence, minutes, memoranda, reports, questionnaires, programs, financial records, membership records, typescript copies of papers presented at meetings, and related printed materials. Several topics of note are the 1926 meeting to honor Margaret Mann; the 1926 cooperative cataloging issue; and the 1946 American Library Association constitution matter. Some of the prominent American librarians to serve as president of this group include Margaret Mann, Wyllis E. Wright, Minnie Earl Sears, F. Bernice Field, and Charles W. Mixer. The catalog record gives fuller information about the Archive and access instructions. Current documents are maintained electronically and may be viewed by contacting the President for access.
